Easter Madness
Why do we do it? Run around from one activity to the next so our kids can have as many experiences as we can cram into their already busy lives. There are swimming lessons, rock climbing lessons, piano lessons, play dates, trips to the library, etc ….and today the big Easter Egg Hunt.
The Easter Egg Hunt at Chanhassen Recreation Center is supposed to take place on a beautiful, sunny, Spring day. It’s supposed to be outside with lots of little girls in frilly easter dresses with sunshine and butterflies. Not so. It has been snowing for three days so the festivities had to be moved indoors. By the time we found parking in the school parking lot next door and wrestled the stroller through shin-high snow we were late for the opening ceremonies – a kids concert. Then, instead of an egg/candy hunt all the children were corralled into a long line so volunteers could fill their baskets from very un-springlike plastic bins full of candy. After walking through the line to cram bags & baskets with candy we were all dumped back into the snowy Spring day, left to eat our candy to give us strength to hike back to the van.
As a mom I seem to feel an overwhelming need to seize every opportunity possible for my children. I feel this will bring them a happy childhood with many memories. I feel like it will make them smarter and give them exposure so they can find passions and hobbies. But sometimes I can’t help but be a little annoyed at rushing around just for the sake of rushing around. Ever the optimist (that’s so annoying sometimes), B pointed out that at least now we know it is a community oriented activity with a lot of turn-out. There will be a lot of such community opportunities this summer.
So, I will get out there & bravely fight snow storms and crowds. I will wrestle with strollers and winter jackets. Perhaps in the recesses of their little minds my daughters will fondly remember trudging through the blizzard to visit the Easter Bunny. Perhaps.
